My paintings are encounters with dreamlike realms - places of sanctuary and discovery. Within them are reflections, edges of gardens, forest pools and glens, and shadows cast by unseen forms. A passing breeze, the curve of a stem, flight paths of birds and insects, and the way light bends through space convey a convergence of presence and perception. I respond to the tactile nature of painting and my materials - oils and oil sticks, acrylics, and spray paint; how they shift, glide, layer, reveal and conceal one another. Shallow spaces form through this process, obscuring, lacing together, and pushing what’s possible within each painting. Through my process I capture the transient essence of these elements, observed, experienced, and imagined. By chasing this sense of immersion, the painter and the viewer become part of the subject
As I work in the present I reach back through my lineage to explore how my direct ancestors conjured hope and beauty while hiding in escape, and relegated to the outskirts of society. I trace my lived sensations through painting, and the paintings become vessels for ancestral memory and experience encoded in gesture, light, place, and paint.
