My work is driven by being alive on earth and the way paint moves and engages with the surface. Iām drawn to the tactile qualities of oil paint, spray paint, oil sticks, and acrylics and how they glide, blend, shift, and respond to one another. I use color intuitively, and work with translucency, opacity, light, line, and gesture to evoke a sense of presence and atmosphere. I reach back through my lineage to explore how my ancestors conjured hope while relegated to the boundaries of society. I trace my lived sensations through painting, and the paintings become vessels for ancestral memory, encoded in gesture.
The paintings are encounters with dreamlike realms - places of sanctuary and discovery. Within them are reflections, edges of gardens, forest pools and glens, and shadows cast by unseen forms. Through my process I seek to capture the transient essence of elements and place, observed, imagined and painted. A passing breeze, the curve of a stem, flight paths of birds and insects, or the way light bends through space. In this way, the paintings are a convergence of presence and perception.
